Lessons Learned From Years of Homeschooling

Lessons Leared from Years of Homeschooling is a blog sponsored by Chalcedon.edu. Some thought provoking thoughts on today's blog entitled "Standing on Your Own Two Feet." Many of us entered the homeschooling model because we thought it was the best way to prepare our children to meet the world's challenges. Then, after a while in the "room", we realized that God had called us to something very different than what we had envisioned.

Art: I think you might have lost a large part of the audience when you used the word pragmatic. This is a definition I looked up on line pragmatic - concerned with practical matters; "a matter-of-fact (or pragmatic) approach to the problem"; "a matter-of-fact account of the trip"
It sounds to me you are using this word as choosing between the lesser of to evils rather than seeking the Lords mind on the matter. I was accused of being Legalistic a while back so I looked up the word in Noah Webster 1828 “American Dictionary of The English Language” and it was not there. I did find “Pragmatist - One who is impertinently busy or meddling”. Consider the two words in Noah Webster’s day and compare it to today. How the pendulum has swung. I must have the wrong Dictionary because I am insulted when called a Pragmatist and feel complimented when called a Legalist. Psalms 1:1,2Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Psa 1:2But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Jim, What I mean about being pragmatic in this context is the idea of giving our own human knowledge more weight than the scriptures. When Christians argue from natural law, then often undermine the authoritiy of the scripture. Or when we argue from a scientific argument at the expense of a scriptural one, we undermine the scripture. Of course in reality, God will uphold the scriptures no matter how we mishandle our arguments. And science will ultimately point in the same direction as the scriptures. But there are often periods of time when science gets it wrong and great pressure is put on the church to modify its beliefs. We must stand by the scriptures and poke holes in the so called science at the same time.

I am rambling on this.

Our minds are a great instrument, but God's mind as revealed in scripture is infinetly greater.
